That does nothing to diminish the accomplishment of Rose, a 31-year-old Englishman who was born in Johannesburg and lives in London and Orlando, Fla. He put together his sterling round of eight-under par by hitting every tree-lined, bunker-flanked fairway and lasering his approach shots to the right spots on 16 of the 18 greens.
The 63 — one stroke off the course record shot by Tiger Woods in 2009 — came on a chilly, windy day that had some Chicagoans reaching for a light sweater, but was not exactly a brisk breeze off the North Sea in Scotland. Still, it was not shirt-sleeve weather, and Rose was a little surprised himself.
Surprisingly, 24 players broke par on a course that several prominent players have openly criticized for its severely undulating greens and deep bunkers. With a forecast for cool temperatures to continue and for some wind as well, the course will only become more difficult going into the weekend.
Dubsdread did exact a toll on some players Thursday. Dustin Johnson, No. 2 in the points standings, struggled in a five-over 76. Jason Day, No. 6 in the standings, shot a six-over 77. And Bubba Watson, 12th in the standings, shot a seven-over 78.
It could yet reach the point where the Callaway X Wedges course takes its toll on the leaders. But for one day, three touring pros had their way with it, something at least one of them always seems to do in the face of dire predictions to the contrary.
“It’s very, very tough to play,” Rose said. “There’s no faking it out there. You’ve got to go out and play good golf. You can’t really get away with too much on this golf course.”
